Secondly, we should explore more areas to cooperate. China and India have identified several areas for cooperation, for example infrastructures, contracting projects, banking, IT and services. But the markets are so different and complementary. After I visited several states of India, I find that more areas are yet to be tapped and explored. One example is tourism. In that area, there are huge opportunities. In east part of India, Kolkata is well known in China, Darjeeling and its tea is well known in China. Bodhgaya as the birth place of Buddhism is important to Buddhists in China. All these areas are well known and attractive to potential tourists in China. But when Chinese tourists visit India, the first place they go is Taj Mahal, not Bodhgaya. They come to Kolkata, then go to New Delhi and finally Taj Mahal. But if one wants to put Bodhgaya into the agenda, one needs to spend extra 3 days. And once one is in Bodhgaya, one would go to Nalanda site, where famous Chinese monk - Xuan Zang visited and studied Buddhist scriptures and also brought scriptures back to China in the 7th Century. But because of the lack of knowledge and information about the places as well as the transportation and infrastructure problems, the number of people visiting those places is very much limited. We need to look at these issues one by one and to seek solution so as to encourage more people to come to these areas. Food processing is of great potentiality for cooperation. India has fertile lands and rich agricultural products. China is also a big country in agricultural sector. In the field of new energy, a few days ago I talked to my friends about the new energy industry in the special economic zone in West Bengal. The CFL, compact fluorescent lamp, and LED are in huge demand in Indian market. But because of the limit on the production capabilities, there is a gap between supply and demand. China has huge investment in that area. There is a big potentiality for future cooperation in new energy sector.
Third, I would propose that we should encourage people-to-people exchanges and enhance understandings. When I first came here, all the local people look the same to me because I can’t find much differences. Right now, when I stand over here, I can recognize many friends and familiar faces. Many people ask me what’s the biggest problem between the trade of our two countries. I also raise the same question to one port official in Kolkata. He told me that the trade is absolutely complementary because everyday he sees so many goods exported from India to China or imported from China to India. But the problem is confidence. Last year, there were one lakh Chinese people coming into India and 5.5 lakh Indian people going to China. This figure is not only unbalanced, but also too small compared to the size of the population of the two great nations. Without enough people-to-people exchanges, how can we expect the opportunities and understanding coming out of that flow of people-to-people exchanges? Many people tell me that they are interested in doing business with China, but they don’t know whom they should trust and deal with when they go to China. The first thing I think is to increase the people-to-people exchanges, to increase the understandings so as to lay a solid foundation for doing business. The governments of China and India should work closely to ease the restrictions on the flow of capital and visa issues to create a better investment environment for both sides to do business.
